Lose Weight With a Green Tea Diet

Stressed and worried, I started looking for an alternate weight-loss solution. It’s kind of funny that the solution was right there in my kitchen cupboard but I just never saw it. It was the age-old (drum roll) green tea.

Green tea not only helped me lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks but also improved my health. Today, I feel great about how I look and feel. So, I have decided to share my green tea diet plan with you. But first, let’s see how green tea can help you lose weight.

Green tea contains an active antioxidant compound, Catechins. One of the catechins, known as Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) helps to boost metabolism and burn fat. EGCG helps to mobilize the fat by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down a hormone called norepinephrine (1). This increases the level of norepinephrine. Now, norepinephrine signals the fat cells to break down fat. Green tea also contains a generous amount of caffeine that stimulates weight loss.

Now that you have a fair idea of how this wonder drink exactly does let’s take a peek into my 7-day green tea diet plan.

7-Day Green Tea Diet Plan

This 7-day diet plan should be followed for three weeks for desired results.

Day 1 (Monday)

Why This Works

Lime juice adds to the taste and flavor of your morning green tea. It also helps to boost your immunity. A heavy nutrient-rich breakfast will keep you active throughout the day. Pre-lunch and pre-dinner green tea will suppress your appetite and prevent you from eating too much. Yogurt contains good gut bacteria that helps in digestion and in turn, aids weight loss. Keep lunch/dinner delicious and nutritious but light.

Green tea found to reduce rate of some cancers....

Women who drink green tea may lower their risk of developing some digestive system cancers, especially cancers of the stomach/esophagus and colorectum, according to a study led by researchers from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

The study by lead author Sarah Nechuta, Ph.D., MPH, assistant professor of Medicine, was published online in advance of the Nov. 1 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., MPH, professor of Medicine, chief of the Division of Epidemiology and director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, was the principal investigator for the study.

To determine green tea’s impact on cancer risk, the investigators surveyed women enrolled in the Shanghai Women’s Health Study, a population-based study of approximately 75,000 middle-aged and older Chinese women. During the initial interview participants were asked if they drank tea, the type of tea consumed and how much they consumed.  Most of the Chinese women reported drinking primarily green tea.

The Beneficial effects of green tea: A literature review...

The health benefits of green tea for a wide variety of ailments, including different types of cancer, heart disease, and liver disease, were reported. Many of these beneficial effects of green tea are related to its catechin, particularly (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, content.

There is evidence from in vitro and animal studies on the underlying mechanisms of green tea catechins and their biological actions. There are also human studies on using green tea catechins to treat metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular risk factors.

Long-term consumption of tea catechins could be beneficial against high-fat diet-induced obesity and type II diabetes and could reduce the risk of coronary disease. Further research that conforms to international standards should be performed to monitor the pharmacological and clinical effects of green tea and to elucidate its mechanisms of action.

Drinkers of Green Tea show less disability with age: study

(Reuters) - Elderly adults who regularly drink green tea may stay more agile and independent than their peers over time, according to a Japanese study that covered thousands of people.

Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals that may help ward off the cell damage that can lead to disease. Researchers have been studying green tea’s effect on everything from cholesterol to the risk of certain cancers, with mixed results so far.
For the new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers decided to examine the question of whether green tea drinkers have a lower risk of frailty and disability as they grow older.
Yasutake Tomata of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and his colleagues followed nearly 14,000 adults aged 65 or older for three years.

They found those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to develop “functional disability,” or problems with daily activities or basic needs, such as dressing or bathing.

Specifically, almost 13 percent of adults who drank less than a cup of green tea per day became functionally disabled, compared with just over 7 percent of people who drank at least five cups a day.

“Green tea consumption is significantly associated with a lower risk of incident functional disability, even after adjustment for possible confounding factors,” Tomata and his colleagues wrote.

Cancer prevention with Green Tea

According to the National Cancer Institute, the polyphenols in tea have been shown to decrease tumor growth in laboratory and animal studies and may protect against damage caused by ultraviolet UVB radiation.

In countries where green tea consumption is high, cancer rates tend to be lower, but it is impossible to know for sure whether it is the green tea that prevents cancer in these particular populations or other lifestyle factors.
Some studies have also shown the positive impacts of green tea on the following types of cancer:
  • breast
  • bladder
  • ovarian
  • colorectal (bowel)
  • esophageal (throat)
  • lung
  • prostate
  • skin
  • stomach
Researchers believe that it is the high level of polyphenols in tea that helps kill cancerous cells and stop them from growing. However, the exact mechanisms by which tea interacts with cancerous cells is unknown.
However, other studies have not found that tea can reduce cancer risk. The amount of tea required for cancer-preventive effects also varies widely in studies - from 2-10 cups per day.

Fast Facts and Health benefits of Green Tea

Green tea, native to Japan, China and India, has been consumed and hailed for its health benefits for centuries globally, but has only recently gained popularity in the United States.

Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world behind water. However, 78 percent of the tea consumed worldwide is black and only about 20 percent is green.
All types of tea, except herbal tea, are brewed from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. The level of oxidation of the leaves determines the type of tea.
Green tea is made from unoxidized leaves and is one of the less processed types of tea. It therefore contains the most antioxidants and beneficial polyphenols.
